A visual support refers to a visual item that can be used to communicate with a child who may have difficulty processing verbal language or using verbal language. Visual supports can be photographs, drawings, objects, written words, or lists. Research has shown that visual supports work well as a way to communicate. Visual supports for someone with ASD can be used for two main purposes: for the parent/caregiver to communicate more effectively to their child or for the child to be able to communicate with others.
